They may not have taught you applied science. So don’t panic.

“Applied science is a discipline that serves to apply existing scientific knowledge to develop more practical applications, for example: technology or inventions. “

In natural sciences, basic science (or pure science) is used to develop information to explain the phenomena of the natural world. This information is then put to use for practical efforts through applied science. Applied science is usually engineering, which develops technology.

Medical sciences such as medical microbiology are examples of applied sciences. These sciences apply biology to medical knowledge and inventions, but not necessarily to medical technology, which is developed more specifically by biomedicine or biomedical engineering.

What is epidemiology?

We are now facing a deadly virus called Covid -19. Applied scientists also study epidemiology. Epidemiology is the study of the patterns, causes and effects of health conditions and diseases in defined populations.

It is an application of the formal sciences of statistics and the theory of probability. Genetic epidemiology is an applied science applying both biological and statistical methods. After this Covid-19 epidemic, there will be a good demand for epidemiologists. Students of applied sciences have the opportunity to specialize in this area.
