RUMOR: ‘Madame Web’ will be a prequel to ‘Spider-Man’

Since its first announcement, Sony Madame Web has been wrapped in, well, a web of mystery. Recently leaked set photos made it even harder to decipher the film, especially since they appeared to allude to Dakota Johnson playing an entirely different version of the classic character. But a new report from The cosmic circus could be the key to understanding who and what the film is about, as well as when exactly it takes place.

In a post Friday morning, the site alleged that it had obtained key information about who most of the characters are playing in the film. Before revealing this information, I just want to urge readers to take it with a grain of salt. Not just because it hasn’t been verified by Sony, Marvel, or any of the major trades, but because if it’s not true, you might be disappointed. I say this because if this information is true, this movie might be a little more interesting than we’ve been led to believe and it might actually reshape the future of Sony’s Spider-Verse.

Despite what the previously mentioned set photos suggest, sources close to The Cosmic Circus claim that Dakota Johnson will in fact play the first Madame Web, Cassandra Webb. While her outfit lines up with the look of another character who takes up the torch in the comics, Julia Carpenter, it looks like it may have just been a playful nod.

Carpenter will, however, appear in the film. That’s who Sydney Sweeney should play against.

Celeste O’Connor is set to play Mattie Franklin, another character who has served as both Madame Web and Spider-Woman in the comics. The site theorizes that Mike Epps could also play his father.

Isabela Merced appears to be playing Anya Corazon aka Spider-Girl. If true, it might give credence to FandomWire report on a Spider-Girl project in development of last month.

[I just want to pause here to say that the potential introduction of so many female superheroes, or characters that are destined to become heroes, all at once makes it seem like Sony has major plans for its Spider-Verse.]

Now this is where the cast goes crazy. Apparently Adam Scott is set to play Uncle Ben Parker – Uncle Ben Parker. That’s not all. Emma Roberts should play her sister Mary Parker aka Peter Parker’s mom!

Now, it’s unclear how Ben and Mary will fit into the story, but other leaked set photos appeared to imply Johnson’s character knows Ben or at least works together.

At this time, there is no indication that Scott and Roberts will age. But then again, if this is true, that means Sony’s Madame Web won’t just be another Spider-Verse spin-off, but rather a Spider-Verse prequel! Whatever Spider-Man universe it’s set in, I think it presents a lot of possibilities for the franchise moving forward.

SJ Clarkson (Jessica Jones) will direct the film, while Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and Kerem Sanga (dinner in america) contributed to the script.

For those unfamiliar with Madame Web, she is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and was therefore connected to a life support system that resembled a spider’s web. Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web has never actively fought villains. Because of this, sources pointed out that it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Insiders close to Deadline claim that Sony wants this character to be their own version of Doctor Strange, due to the character’s sensory powers.

Filming began last month and is expected to continue through September in Boston. The movie was recently pushed back to October 6, 2023. It looks like the studio is hoping to build on the success of the Venom films which also enjoyed moderate box office success after their October releases.

The next Spider-Verse movie being served by Sony is Kraven the Hunter, which hits theaters in January.
