How to enable Together Mode on the Microsoft Teams app and web

Microsoft introduced Teams Together mode last year to improve user experience and compete with other top-notch video conferencing apps. With Together mode, you get your team’s obstacles with a unified window coupled with a custom background.

But how does Microsoft Teams Together mode work and how do you activate it? Let’s find out.

What is Together Mode in Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams Together mode is a tool introduced to make remote meetings more engaging. It integrates separate lens visuals into a shared environment that gives you a conference effect. Additionally, Microsoft Teams uses AI mapping to cut out your face and shoulders from your respective screens and create an avatar.

Fortunately, Microsoft Teams is now available for personal use, so you can have a video conference on Microsoft Teams with your friends or have virtual family gatherings as well.

You can choose from virtual spaces like a library, auditorium, or office, and the avatar fits into the virtual space you’ve chosen. It also allows you to high-five with your co-workers and tap people on the shoulder. A meeting must have at least two participants for you to use Together mode.

If you’re wondering how to use Together Mode on Microsoft Teams, we’ve got you covered. This article will walk you through the steps for both the Microsoft Teams app and the web version.

  2. Log in and join a meeting.
  3. During the call, you will find a panel at the bottom of the Teams screen. Click the ellipsis icon.

Note that you may need to check with the administrator and find out if they have enabled Together mode for you.

When you’re done, you should be able to see all of your team members in the view of your choice.

When do you need Microsoft Teams Together mode?

Together Mode offers a more inclusive environment in a world where remote working has become the norm. Here’s when using Together mode would add value to your MS Teams experience:

  1. When the number of participants is high: Using Together mode will allow you to feel connected in a virtual space and have natural conversations as if you would in a physical world. For example, if you have 30 attendees, you can use an auditorium background where all of the faces appear to occupy the seats in an auditorium.
  2. When your calendar is full of back-to-back meetings: Employees deal with meeting fatigue when they have to jump from one conference to another. With Together mode, conferencing becomes less exhausting and gives you a similar feeling to an in-person meeting.
  3. When you want a more engaging experience: Together mode provides a more engaging experience, especially for the host. Microsoft Teams brings participants together like they would in a real conference room to deliver an experience that’s as close to the real thing as possible.

Other Things to Know About Together Mode

You’ll need at least two participants to enable Together mode, and Teams can accommodate a maximum of 49 participants in a single meeting. When you enable Together mode, it does not affect the view of other participants. They continue to see the standard Microsoft Teams screen.

Of course, only users with the latest version of Microsoft Teams can enable Together Mode, assuming the host or presenter has enabled it. All attendees with the latest version can see Together mode as long as the host or presenter has enabled it. If the presenter has not enabled Ensemble mode, you will need to ask them to enable Ensemble mode.

Bring your meetings to life

You can install Microsoft Teams on Linux, Windows, iOS, and Android devices. You can also use a browser like Chrome or Edge to use the web version if you have a single MS Teams meeting. Additionally, Together Mode provides a more engaging environment where participants can experience meetings as they would in a workplace. Together Mode, however, is just one of many features coming to Microsoft Teams in 2021.
