It is not surprising that after the huge, huge success of Spider-Man: No Coming Home that Sony would like to accelerate other Spider-adjacent films for its The Spider-Man universe. For reasons that I don’t personally understand, it looks like it will be Madame Weblike Deadline reports that The social network and 50 shades of gray star Dakota Johnson is in talks for the lead role.

According to The Official Marvel BiographyMadame Web is an elderly woman who “suffered her life from blindness and many years of neurological deterioration due to myasthenia gravis, [which] she compensated with her deep psychic abilities, establishing herself as a medium. An encounter with the Juggernaut “left Madame Web in severe shock after he unknowingly pulled her from her chair, which provided her with vital functions”. Then she was in a coma, then she died, and then she came back young and healthy… but now she’s old again? As always, comics, everyone.

Since Madame Web has really only played a supporting role for Spider-Man and other Spider-Man characters, making her the star of her own movie seems like a really bizarre decision, especially when known heroines of Spider-Man as Jessica Drew spider womanby Cindy Moon Silkand Gwen Stacy ghost spider are much more active protagonists. As Deadline puts it, “Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web has never actively fought villains. Because of this, sources pointed out that it’s possible the project could turn into something else.

Whether that means Sony is going to focus on rejuvenating Madame Web and turn her into a proper superhero, or that the studio will give up and just cast Johnson as Jessica Drew is anyone’s guess at the moment. In the meantime, fans looking for more Spider-adjacent entertainment can brace themselves for Morbiuswhich hits theaters on April 1.
